These bubbles rise due to buoyancy, setting the liquid electrolyte into motion. Normally, pumps are used to induce this electrolyte flow, which moves heat out of the cells. However, by designing an electrolyser well, pumps are no longer needed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"921\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/jwhaverkort.weblog.tudelft.nl\/files\/2025\/10\/image-921x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jwhaverkort.weblog.tudelft.nl\/files\/2025\/10\/image-921x1024.png 921w, https:\/\/jwhaverkort.weblog.tudelft.nl\/files\/2025\/10\/image-270x300.png 270w, https:\/\/jwhaverkort.weblog.tudelft.nl\/files\/2025\/10\/image-768x854.png 768w, https:\/\/jwhaverkort.weblog.tudelft.nl\/files\/2025\/10\/image.png 976w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 921px) 100vw, 921px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We developed a model that accurately predicts the liquid flow rate (<em>Q<sub>l<\/sub><\/em>) as a function of the gas flow rate <em>(Q<sub>g<\/sub><\/em>), matching our in-house experiments very well:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"606\" height=\"155\" src=\"https:\/\/jwhaverkort.weblog.tudelft.nl\/files\/2025\/10\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-548\" style=\"width:382px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jwhaverkort.weblog.tudelft.nl\/files\/2025\/10\/image-1.png 606w, https:\/\/jwhaverkort.weblog.tudelft.nl\/files\/2025\/10\/image-1-300x77.png 300w, https:\/\/jwhaverkort.weblog.tudelft.nl\/files\/2025\/10\/image-1-500x128.png 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 606px) 100vw, 606px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It includes the most important physical effects, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>viscous losses in the downcomer (<em>Q<sub>v<\/sub><\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>inertial losses due to bends and turbulence (<em>Q<sub>i<\/sub><\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>bubble slip (<em>Q<sub>s<\/sub><\/em>)<br><br>From this equation we derived expressions for the optimal electrode-wall distance that, for example, maximizes the electrolyte flow rate.
